We just took the Monument Valley tour with Don, and I can confidently say it exceeded my expectations. This was my second time touring the Valley, and while I expected to see new areas and learn more about Navajo culture, this experience was far more than just sightseeing.
Don has an incredible depth of knowledge about both the monuments and their cultural significance to the Navajo and other Indigenous tribes both past and present. His insights went beyond just the Western films shot in the Valley, making the tour far richer and more meaningful than I had anticipated.
I will absolutely be returning to Monument Valley, and when I do, another tour with Don will be a must.
For Those Interested in the Cultural Aspect
If you are still reading, I’ll share more details for those particularly interested in the cultural depth of this tour.
Before our trip, I had read parts of the Navajo creation story and was eager to hear more specific insights from Don. Reading is one thing, but having an interactive conversation with an expert is a whole new level of learning. I had asked the tour provider if it would be possible to incorporate more cultural and historical information, and Don truly delivered.
As a former educator in Navajo language and culture, Don built up the information gradually, layer by layer, throughout the tour. I walked away having learned far more than I had even hoped for.
My wife, who had not done any reading beforehand, commented that she wished we had recorded the entire tour. In fact, she said it was the highlight of our entire 10-day trip out West. If you want to get even more out of the experience, I highly recommend reading just a little bit beforehand will gain even deeper insights from the tour.
As I mentioned earlier, I will definitely be returning for another tour with Don.
