Overview

We will visit the city of Izamal, the first magic town in México, considered a colonial jewel. We choose IZAMAL because is a truly Magic Town with a unique mix of Mayan archaeological remains hidden in its fantastic colonial architecture, its gastronomy that combines pre-Hispanic techniques with Colonial flavors, its legends, its traditions that take you back in time 5 centuries. We will guide you to climb the top of one of the largest pyramid in the world. We also will visit the San Antonio de Padua Convent built upon a Mayan shrine with one of the biggest closed atrium in the world. To make you experience authentic and memorable, you will meet one of the Grand Masters hand-crafters of México and will discover his original jewel technique using organic plants and you will learn in a workshop how to create a Mayan piece. If you are adventurous, you can select the option to drive your own squad bike and experience an exciting ride through this amazing Magical Town.

Izamal

We will drive early in the morning from Mérida to IZAMAL Magic Town. Duration: 1 Hr. If you select CLASSIC OPTION: You will aboard this picturesque CALESA, a colonial carriage pulled by a horse, while you enjoy your ride you will discover the archaeological zone immersed between its houses painted in yellow and white, a detail that gives authenticity and personality to this town. Duration: 30 Min. If you select ADVENTURE OPTION: Hop on a QUAD BIKE, accelerate and safely have an exciting ride through the wonderful streets of the Magical Town of Izamal. Enjoy this experience! Duration: 1 Hr. Lunch time: You will have free time to delight the Yucatecan gastronomy in one of the best restaurants in town. Duration: 1 Hr 30 min. We will walk through the colonial streets of this famous yellow town to capture the best pictures. To finish our tour we will go back to Mérida. Duration: 1 Hr. IMPORTANT: You must select one of this two options at booking.

Piramide de Kinich Kak Moo

To get the best panoramic view of the town, we will climb to the top of the Kinich Kakmó Pyramid, the largest in surface area at Yucatan Peninsula and the third in Mexico after the Sun´s Pyramid of Teotihuacán and the one in Cholula, Puebla.

Convento de San Antonio de Padua

You will have the opportunity to visit the Franciscan Convent of San Antonio de Padua. This masterpiece of colonial architecture was built in the XVI century over a Mayan shrine and has the second largest closed atrium in the world, after St. Peter's Square in the Vatican.

Taller Maya Izamal

During this workshop you will discover the artisanal techniques to manufacture beautiful jewelry from the spines of the henequen plant and cocoyol, the seeds of a certain variety of palm tree, and you will learn the ancestral Maya techniques to create these beautiful master peaces from the Grand Mayan Master Artisan Don Esteban Abán.

The Perfect Day in Izamal – A Must-Book Experience!

I can’t recommend this tour highly enough! Every stop in Izamal was a delight, and our guide, Blanca, along with our driver, Fernando, made the experience truly memorable. They were friendly, knowledgeable, and so much fun to chat with. They went above and beyond to make sure we were comfortable (a cozy car stocked with snacks and drinks!) and to help us fully appreciate Izamal and Mayan culture. Be sure to take their lunch recommendations - it was our favorite meal of our entire trip to Yucatan! A real highlight was the jewelry-making workshop with the maestro. We were so grateful for the opportunity to see his craft up close and appreciated how welcoming he was as he shared his expertise and culture with us. Definitely book this experience - it’s one you won’t want to miss!!

An interesting mix of activities in a quaint beautiful town. We opted for the ATV tour which was a fun way to travel around town and see the Mayan ruins - which you can still climb, if you dare. As with their other tours, Travelezza partners with talented local artisans to provide a unique immersive experience that we enjoyed. The suggested restaurant was very nice and a great opportunity to try local cuisine (where deer is one of the common proteins on the menu). It was another enjoyable and memorable day on our vacation.

What a wonderful way to end 2023. Thank you to Luisa and our guide Gabriel for giving us a pleasant and informative introduction to the Yucatan history. Gabriel is kind, professional and extremely knowledgable. Magical city of Izamal is certainly worth a visit. One of the highlights was the lunch at Kinich restaurant.
