Overview

See puffins up close on the puffin express tour from Reykjavik. The specially designed boat takes you close to the rocky shore of Akurey island to see the lovely seabirds in their natural environment. Learn about the puffins and other seabirds in the area from your knowledgeable onboard guide.

Meeting points

Please make your way to the Special Tours ticket office. There you will check in and meet your guide, who will take everyone to the boat just before the departure time. Please arrive at least 10 minutes prior to the departure.

Itinerary

Following pickup at your hotel in Reykjavík (if option selected), board the comfortable puffin express boat for a 15-minute cruise to Akurey, an island known for its puffin population, just off the coast of Reykjavik. Puffins nest between May and August on this island, which is covered with small hills and slopes and known for its colorful bird life. As the island's shores are rocky, your puffin-watching boat is specially designed to get you as close to the shoreline as possible, so you can get an up-close look at these adorable creatures! On board, learn from your expert guide about the puffins as well as other interesting seabirds that you may spot on the tour, such as northern fulmars, gulls, arctic terns and black guillemots. Enjoy watching the sweet seabirds nesting and diving into the sea to get food. When you arrive at the Akurey shore, circle around the island for more observation time before the captain turns the engines off, allowing you to enjoy the peace and quiet among Iceland’s natural treasures. You have the choice of five departure times throughout the day (up to seven departures from June-August) to suit your Iceland itinerary.

Great tour to start our trip!

Had an amazing cruise around the puffins with very knowledgeable tour guides. We had great views from inside the boat cabin and on the deck, and got close enough to see the beautiful birds in detail! There are plenty of binoculars on board, although they get used pretty rough, so if you have your own you should bring them with you, but the ones on boat work fine if you don't.

A perfect day for a boat trip as the sea was calm, blue skies and little wind. It was only about 15 minutes or so out to the island with a funny and knowledgeable guide. There were hundreds of puffins and some other sea birds there. Although there were binoculars on the boat would recommend bringing your own.

My wife I wanted to be able to see and photograph Puffins so I made reservations to use your Company on August 9, 2024 when our cruise ship was there. We were thrilled with our experience which was just as advertised as a few of our photographs prove. We saw and photographed huge groups of Puffins in the air and on the water.
