Overview

This tide pool is my secret. It's off the beaten path. A miracle of nature. We'll use a jungle/lava rock coastal trail. Each way takes 30-40 min (1/2 mile) (10 min. in jungle, 20-30 min. on coast). Only your group will participate. I'll teach you about the pool's ecosystem and the local environment. You'll also have time to explore/relax privately. You control how long we stay at the pool. - Elevation gain on the hike offers amazing coastal views. Sea turtles are a common sight in the ocean. - The pool is like an infinity pool overlooking cliffs. The water is crystal clear. You'll be alone because this spot is unknown. - The pool is like an an aquarium with fish, hermit crabs, rock crabs, sea cucumbers, shrimp, snails, spaghetti worms, pink coralline algae, seaweed, shells, & cool rocks. - Waves strike the cliffs and shoot water in the air like a blowhole (conditions permitting). A once-in-a-lifetime photo opp. - The pool is calm/safe with a deep (4-7 ft.) & shallow (1-4 ft.) area.

Meeting points

Park on Papio St. on the side of the road in front of the park. Turn left onto Papio St. 40 ft. before the GPS endpoint. You'll then follow me by car for 2 miles to the trailhead. If you're Ubering, you can ride w/ me to the trailhead (4 ppl max), or message me & I'll give you a new meeting address.

Some info about me: My name is Josh; I'm 33; I live off-grid; I moved to Big Island in 2018; I graduated from UNC-Chapel Hill with a degree in philosophy. I have a wide range of knowledge about the local environment - the plants, animals, marine life, history, & culture. I treat this experience as nature therapy. I will help you feel the healing power of nature and reconnect you with your body. The hike is composed of jungle, boulder fields, lava fields, & lava hills. Some parts of the hike are rugged. A few sections require you to ascend/descend a small hill of solid lava rock. There's always a place to put your feet/hands & the lava is stable. I don't recommend this hike for anyone with a disability/children under 7. The exact lower age cutoff depends on the child/parent. There's no upper age cutoff or fitness requirement. Many people who are out of shape have succeeded. While the tide pool is often fully accessible, sometimes only certain parts are accessible. Almost always there's an area to submerge yourself. Rarely, the levels are too low or the conditions too rough for swimming. There are no ticks and very few bugs or mosquitoes.

Wear hiking shoes, hiking sandals, or athletic shoes for the hike. Hiking shoes are most ideal. If you do wear sandals, closed-toe are most ideal.
Wear water shoes at the tide pool. Closed-toe shoes with durable soles are most ideal.
Wear a bathing suit and bring a towel. There are no bathrooms at the tide pool.
Many people bring a snorkeling mask or goggles.
Apply "reef safe" sunscreen before the hike to minimize its contact with the tide pool water. Bug spray is unnecessary because there are no ticks and very few bugs or mosquitoes.
Some people bring a first aid kit because I don't provide one.

This experience requires a minimum number of travelers. If it’s canceled because the minimum isn’t met, you’ll be offered a different date/experience or a full refund.

1000% worth every penny. This was a wonderful day. Josh was awesome and very good about being patient with the slow one of the group (me!) The teens said it was the best hike they have ever been on and absolutely loved it too. It wasn’t for the faint of heart, you have to be able to climb over rocks but man was it well worth every rock we climbed over! Josh was relaxed and gave us space to enjoy the area on our own a bit but was there when we had questions about the plants or sea creatures we saw. Highly recommend!

The hike to the tide pools was challenging; however, my kids (6 and 7 years old) found it to be so much fun. We are an athletic family, so hike was great. I would consider it an intermediate challenge, but it was worth it! It was absolutely beautiful and the secret ride pool Josh brought us to was phenomenal. We spent about an hour just soaking it all in. It is like no place else on earth. Just gorgeous! Code memories for sure!!
