Overview

Join this completely self-guided tour for an extraordinary geothermal experience! A unique natural geothermal attraction, situated between Rotorua and Taupo. View up close, geysers, mud pools, hot springs, silica terraces, New Zealand's natural bush and a very rare thermal cave. Said to be "Arguably the Best Thermal in New Zealand". The attraction is a self guided walk of 2.5kms and takes between 1 and 1.5 hours to complete. Open 365 days of the year (including Christmas Day) from 8m through to 4:30pm. A short return ferry trip to the attraction is included and runs on demand.

Orakei Korako Cave & Thermal Park

Orakei Korako boasts the most active geysers of any geothermal park in New Zealand. Up to 23 active natural geysers play freely through the area, which is constantly changing. Marvel at the number of boiling hot springs and the vibrant colours all around you, or take a native bushwalk through this untouched geothermal paradise. The Lonely Planet Guide describes Orakei Korako as "...arguably the best thermal area left in New Zealand".

Super accessible thermal attraction

The last time we were here was just after covid and we were the only customers and there was only one staff member. What a joy it was therefore to see the business up to fully functioning and to see so many appreciative customers. A very accessible way to see geothermal activity and with a nice little boat ride thrown it. Brilliant if you're near Taupo. Highly recommended.

Stunning location, and a unique experience in a landscape unlike anything I've seen before. Very well set out and maintained. You get a true otherworldly feeling in amongst the pools of boiling mud, clouds of steam, bubbling pools and the rainbow colours of the silica. Smart visitor centre with very friendly staff too.

All-round brilliant experience: way better than anything in Rotorua in terms of the geothermal features and the beautiful location on the edge of a lake. The staff are particularly friendly too, even by NZ standards.

If you want a geothermal experience without coach tours and lots of tourists taking selfies come here. Beautiful location, friendly and welcoming staff and the self guided tour was very interesting. Lots to see and the walk through the 3 different sections informative. We visited on a Saturday and wasn't busy at all. A little hidden gem which is thoroughly recommended.
