Overview

The iconic Globe Theatre is a faithful reconstruction of the open-air playhouse in which Shakespeare worked, and for which he wrote many of his most famous plays! Their expert guide-storytellers provide a fascinating tour of the Globe Theatre auditorium, vividly recreating colourful stories of the 1599 Playhouse, the London Shakespeare would have known and the Globe reconstruction process in the 1990s. Their guides will also bring the theatre to life exploring how the ‘wooden ‘O’ works today as an imaginative and experimental space for performance.

    Step inside this faithful recreation of William Shakespeare’s iconic Globe theatre. Imagine it as it would have been at the centre of London’s notorious Bankside entertainment district. Throughout the year their expert guides bring this extraordinary open-air theatre to life in a 45 minute guided tour, with colourful stories of the 1599 Globe, the reconstruction process in the 1990s and how the building works today as an imaginative and experimental theatre space. Take a seat ‘within this wooden ‘O’’ – listen, absorb and ask questions as the secrets of the Globe unfold. Explore the new exhibition space and become immersed in the sights, sounds, and smells of Shakespeare's London.

  • Duration of guided tour is 45 minute.
  • The Globe is a working theatre, tour times vary due to performance schedules or sometimes take place during rehearsals (giving you an exclusive look at the rehearsal process!).
  • Guided tours take place in all weathers.
  • There is no dress code, but we recommend visitors wear appropriate clothing and footwear as tours take place outdoors.

This is a must for Shakespeare fans, or fans of History of the area in general. The information that was shared was something I had never heard of. I was surprised by a lot of the details that were shared. I would love to visit again and watch an actual play.

Fantastic tour. Clive was friendly and entertaining and kept the kids engaged. Loved learning about the history of the Globe and its unique construction. So nice to step into the past for a bit. Wonderful gift shop.

More horrible history than stuffy

Highly engaging tour with excellent guide Llyr. He really made the times and the theatre experience of the day come to life. Very open to questions from anyone and conscious of the visitors’ experience while respecting the actors rehearsing on the stage.

Really interesting tour of the theatre. Llyr was an excellent and amusing tour guide who really brought everything to life. He shared lots of info about the theatre, Elizabethan London and Shakespeare in a very interesting way. The tour has inspired me to book tickets for a show here later in the summer.

We Love Vincent!

In 2024 we took the regular Globe guided tour and loved it. This year the Globe Pride guided tour was being offered during our stay and it way exceeded our expectations! Our tour guide, Vincent, was born to do this job. He was clear, concise, beyond knowledgeable on the LGBTQ+ theatre history of the time (and even the history going back to Roman times). He was funny and expressive and easy to understand. I could personally listen to him speak on the subject all day. The Pride tour is chock full of information, including why the theatre is so important to the LGBTQ+ community to this day. Vincent delved into the culture, individual stories of playwrights and players, the turbulent and sometimes uncomfortable situations that happened against and within the community, funny quotes and innuendo within manuscripts, and so much more. The Globe Pride tour is for everyone. There's so much interesting information and history whether or not you identify with the LGBTQ+ community. GO!
