Overview

Explore historic Canterbury and the surrounding countryside as we take you around our city’s most beautiful and well-known icons. Discover the city's secrets and stories on a unique sight-running journey. We'll run along the old city walls to the four corners of the city and through hundreds of years of stories. In just an hour you'll see and learn all about the key historic and cultural sites Canterbury has to offer, as well as discovering some of the city's many secrets. Your guide will be happy to answer any questions you may have or even take a detour to show you something that may be of interest to the group. The tour is suitable for all levels of runner, from beginner to expert. We will run at whichever pace feels most comfortable for the group and nobody gets left behind. Our tours contain frequent stops so you will most likely be able to run further and faster than you would on your usual run.

Itinerary

Canterbury Cathedral (Pass By)

Our city tour starts and ends outside the cathedral. Your guide will give you a rich insight into the role and importance of the cathedral in the city's history, it's dramatic past and the role it serves today.
Canterbury City Walls (Pass By)

When you're up on the city walls, you're running along 2,000 years of history. Hear all about how the walls went from primitive Roman defences to the fortified stone work that you see today.
Dane John Gardens

The highest point of the tour is on Dane John Mound, the mysterious hill in the city's central park. From here you can see most of the city and get a sense of it's scale and beauty.

Franciscan Gardens

You'll see some of the monastery buildings, established in 1267 and one of the prettiest spots in the city.

Westgate Gardens

Just outside the city walls are stunning Westgate Gardens. Here we cross the River Stour and pause by the giant Baobab plane tree. It's 200 years old and is hiding a remarkable secret.

Westgate Towers Museum & Viewpoint

The main entrance into the city, this medieval tower and gatehouse stands at an imposing 18 metres and is the oldest surviving surviving tower in Britain. Built in 1378, your guide will show you some of it's secrets and explain how it was the first sight many visitors would see on arrival to the city.

The Marlowe Theatre

Learn about the different statues and sculptures around the theatre and how they relate to one of Canterbury's most famous sons, Christopher Marlowe.

Scenic run round the city of Canterbury

Had a great time running the sites and getting an incite in to Canterbury. Ran at a pace to suit and Andy was great company as well as very knowledgeable. Would thoroughly recommend this run

The tour was recommended by a friend and it didn’t disappoint! We really got to see the city and learnt so much all whilst moving our bodies out in the sun! Andy was friendly and relaxed and made sure we were all happy with the pace whilst spouting endless facts and stories about Canterbury. Thanks Andy!

The best way to visit Canterbury

An excellent way to visit Canterbury, it was a really nice time listening to Andy’s knowledge and taking a morning jog with the city still very quiet and exploring it, if you are a runner enthusiast this is an amazing way to get the best of it. And Andy is such an easygoing person that there's no way you will not enjoy it, thank you and we still need to come back for some of the recommendations that Andy provided .

The best way to experience Canterbury

Loved this run. Getting up at 6am in the rain to run around the city seemed questionable at the time, but it was so worth it. Andy showed us some really astounding things and his passion for history (and running) really shone through. We were able to cover loads of landmarks, and because it was early we had them mostly to ourselves. If you're a runner, this has got to be the best way to tour the city.
