Zeitz MOCAA was founded with the vision of being the first major museum in Africa, and a leading museum in the world, dedicated to contemporary art from Africa and its diaspora. From its inception, the aim was to become a place that draws people from around the world and to have the cultural, environmental and social relevance of a prestigious international art museum in an African context. Moreover, the museum was founded around the desire to provide access to a core collection of art to the public; and to create an institution that advances the knowledge, appreciation and preservation of art, personal liberties, equality, freedom of speech, and democracy.

Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa (Zeitz MOCAA) is a public, not-for-profit institution that exhibits, collects, preserves and researches contemporary art from Africa and its diaspora; conceives and hosts international exhibitions; develops supporting educational, discursive and enrichment progammes; encourages intercultural understanding; and strives for access for all. The museum’s galleries feature rotating, temporary exhibitions with a dedicated space for the permanent collection. The institution also includes the Centre for Art Education, the Centre for the Moving Image, and a project space for emerging artists.

Inspiring Architectural Story

Personally, when a work of art needs three or more paragraphs of text to explain what I'm looking at, I lose artistic interest. This was the case with many exhibits which I found intelligent but uninspiring. Some, especially by a Ghanaian artist, were beautiful. However, the visit was worthwhile just for the stunning architectural marvel of carving a museum into a more than 100year old grain silo at the docks! World class.

A must-see when at the V&A!

It’s a clever concept; an art gallery across a number of different floors. Not really a modern art fan at all, but even I found stuff to capture my interest and keep me interested for a couple of hours.

Stunning Space- Installations Are a Mix

The space alone is worth visiting. It's beyond stunning. Coolest thing I've ever seen @ a museum- they offer a # of prints on thin paper for guests to be able to take with them as they leave. What a cool idea that other museums should try!! The staff was super friendly and helpful at the museum as there are many twists and turns and some very dark/nearly pitch black spaces to navigate. The installations were a mix- some were provocative and some seemed like school projects. Overall a neat place to visit for an hour in concert with walking around the nearby Watershed- makes a perfect pairing. The only inhibitive dimension is th aggressively high price. It's too expensive for international guests for many visitors and a bit high for what you get thru engaging with the exhibitions.

Very interesting museum / gallery with unusual art. This is not a “typical” museum, definitely some modern pieces. On top of that, architecture was stunning.

You must see this building!!!

I walked in and I was stunned. Yes, they have exhibits, but the building will ALWAYS be the star! Even the elevators are worth a trip. The exhibits are interesting, but unfortunately will always be second fiddle to the amazing facility. There's a very good gift shop (although the Watershed has better prices) and if you're in the mood, on top of and next to the museum is a ***** (five star) hotel with a very posh bar that overlooks everything. So, for the building, stay for the exhibits, and relax in the eye popping bar.
