This plantation was founded in 1752 and it has become a valuable source of information about the lives of the people who lived, worked, and died here during times of slavery. This five-hour tour not only provides visitors an opportunity to discover more about this part of American history, but it also serves as an insight to those who were affected by slavery. When touring the Whitney Plantation, guests can view original slave cabins, exhibits featuring artifacts including clothing, tools, furniture, and even old sugar cane fields. There is also a chapel onsite that offers spiritual guidance for descendants of slaves still living in the area today. The Whitney Plantation offers visitors an unparalleled glimpse into our nation’s past while providing education and remembrance for those who have been impacted by the dark history of slavery in America.

Powerful history lesson

Our driver, Brian, did a wonderful job of explaining history of New Orleans and the area between there and Whitney Plantation. The audio tour of Whitney Plantation is educational, informative and thought provoking. The tour provides a sense of daily life for enslaved people that, in the setting where it occurred is very powerful. This is history that is crucial for all Americans to understand, especially at a time like the present when some people don’t want it taught. As a white person I came away with great respect for the resilience of my Black fellow citizens and a commitment to resist repeating such history.
