Begin your bike tour at the historic Drum Tower, an architectural marvel that has stood tall for centuries. Marvel at its intricate design and learn about its significance in Beijing's history. Originally called the Tower of Orderly Administration (Qizhenglou), the Drum Tower was constructed in 1272 during Kublai Khan's reign, marking the center of the Yuan capital, Dadu. Rebuilt in 1420 during the Ming dynasty under the Yongle Emperor and extensively renovated in 1800 by the Qing dynasty's Jiaqing Emperor, this landmark offers a unique glimpse into Beijing's rich cultural heritage.

Pedal onwards to Jingshan Park, located just north of the Forbidden City. Jingshan Park is a picturesque 23-hectare (57-acre) imperial park in the Imperial City area of Beijing. The park's central feature is an artificial hill called Jingshan, offering panoramic views of the city. Originally a private imperial garden connected to the Forbidden City, it opened to the public in 1928 and was officially established as a park in 1949. Managed by both Xicheng and Dongcheng districts, Jingshan Park is a Key State Park in the heart of downtown Beijing.

Covering 147 hectares, Shichahai was once the bustling commercial hub of Beijing and is now a popular tourist destination. Located near the north gate of Beihai Park, Shichahai Lake Park is a must-see scenic spot in Beijing.

Wangfujing Street

Navigate your way to Wangfujing Street, a bustling commercial hub renowned for its vibrant night market and shopping district. Indulge in local street food delicacies and soak up the lively atmosphere of this famous area. Wangfujing is a well-known shopping street in the Dongcheng District of Beijing. Mostly pedestrianized, it has been a center of commercial activity since the middle of the Ming Dynasty. During the Qing Dynasty, ten aristocratic estates and a princess residence were constructed here. The street was named Wangfujing after a well full of sweet water was discovered in the area. Wangfujing is also famous for its snack street, offering a wide variety of exotic foods to visitors, making it a must-see destination for food lovers and shoppers alike. From here, we will ride back to the Drum Tower, the tour will be finished then.

A different side to Beijing

The tour providers were very responsive and it was easy to arrange the tour at short notice. My guide, Dean, spoke very good English and was incredibly knowledgeable, including lots of fascinating anecdotes and details about Chinese culture and history throughout. The tour was timed to perfection: you catch beautiful golden hour cycling through Beijing's lovely parks and see the major sites lit up in the early evening. I highly recommend the tour for that reason; Beijing has a completely different character at night which should not be missed! The cycling itself was comfortable enough- Dean set me up in an appropriate bike and it felt safe cycling all around central Beijing.

For the experienced cyclist the local Mobikes are less than your carbon dreams. Despite that this three hour tour was fantastic and Dean was a most knowledgeable and thoughtful guide getting us around safely and easily. He even booked us on his own Uber to get us back to our hotel when we finished. We actually found cycling around Beijing much safer than Melbourne. Getting around any city on a bike is a fantastic way to get your bearings and really get a taste for local life. Highly recommended.

Beijing by bike is a great experience

Dean was our very engaging, flexible and capable guide for our bike tour for our final night in Beijing. Beijing by bike is exhilarating and it is a great way to see the city. Dean met us just before sunset between the Drum and Bell Towers. He introduced himself and got us adjusted on our bikes for the evening (for the tours, he used a combination of Ofo and BlueGogo the night we were on the tour). While this tour hits many of the same sites you'll hit on any and every Beijing tour, seeing them via bike, in the evening and through the stories Dean tells is a combination that's hard to beat!
