This was an incredible day visiting a coffee farm, the active Poas volcano, and the Poas waterfall gardens and animal conservation area. Olman was our driver and Daniel was our guide. Olman was an excellent driver, although the narrow/winding mountain roads are not for the faint of heart. If you are prone to motion sickness, consider bringing and taking your preferred medication. Daniel effortlessly conducted the tour in English and Spanish, including everyone each step of the way. He gave us great information on the history and realities of coffee farming in Costa Rica as we walked among the coffee trees. The Poas volcano was extraordinary- after a short safety video and obtaining our hard hats, we walked about 800m up a paved path to the overlook to the crater. The crater lake was steaming and colorful, and Daniel made sure to get individual photos of all of us at the viewpoint. After our 20 minutes, we walked back to the bus and went to the Poas waterfall gardens. If you love nature and animals, this is the opportunity to get closer! Visitors walk through enclosures with birds, insects, butterflies, sloths, and more to capture the biodiversity of this country. All the animals are rescues and are unable to be released back into the wild for different reasons. After the animals, we were treated to a delicious lunch under a covered patio. After lunch we descended down to the Poas waterfalls. The path can be slippery, and I would recommend wearing sturdy shoes and bringing a light jacket- it can be chilly at the volcano and by the waterfall mist. You can also bring water and additional snacks, although there are stops along the way where food and drinks are available. The waterfalls have many photo opportunities and viewpoints along the path. We ended the walk at our van and stopped for a photo opportunity of the expansive Central Valley. We stopped at a roadside stand for locally grown strawberries (so good!) and a tasting of local wines before driving back to San Jose. I thoroughly enjoyed this tour and our driver and guide- they made the experience better!
