Overview

Hop into the saddle and experience the best of New Zealand’s great outdoors on this 1 hour horse trekking adventure from Rotorua. Choose the start time to suit your schedule, then follow a guide on horseback into the countryside around Mt. Ngongotaha. Explore green paddocks and working farmland, and enjoy fine views over Lake Rotorua in the distance. This tour includes all safety gear plus wet weather gear if raining.

Itinerary

This is a guided walking horse trek. Prior instructions are given before departing the paddock arena. You will be allocated a riding hat and a suitable horse to match your ability. Riders must be 12 years old minimum. There is a maximum weight limit of 100kgs for the rider. Starting on the lower farm you follow our guide and wind your way up to our lookout overlooking Lake Rotorua which you will see in our photos. The whole experience takes part on the lower part of Mount Ngongotaha. There is some uneven terrain during the trek, however, no previous experience is required. Helmets are provided for safety reasons.

Fun ride through the fields

I liked riding horses through the winding hills among the sheep and cows. It was relaxing and fun. The photo at the top of the hill came out all backlit, and none of our faces could be seen, so that was a bummer, but I don't need to rate the worker on their poor photography skills.

Beautiful views, Calm Well Mannered Horses

The guide was nice, informative and very patient. My horse liked to stop and try to snack and she explained to me how to stop the horse but I wasn’t the best at it, she was very patient as we figured it out together. The views were beautiful, all the horses were very chill and well mannered, they knew the trail well, we didn’t have to do much besides stop them from snacking. I recommend doing this if you have the time and love animals. Side note, they had a cute dog I got to pet while waiting for our horse trek to start.

Best place to go for a first time ride

For someone that has never been on a horse, I thoroughly enjoyed. The Tour Guide was awesome and so accommodating. My horse “Hacey” was so well behaved and just followed along in order. The view at the top of the hill is just beautiful. Would definitely recommend it. Thanks Jen (Queensland, Australia)
