Charminar
Charminar was built by Sultan Mohammed Quli Qutb Shah in 1591. It is said that this square shaped structure with four pillars and intricate carvings As per a popular belief, Charminar was built to acknowledge the elimination of the plague which had affected the entire city immensely during that era. It is believed that the Sultan had prayed for the end of this plague with which his people were suffering. Hence, as the plague ended, he built the charminar as a tribute to Allah. The four pillars are also said to be dedicated to the first four caliphs of Islam.
The inscription on the foundation stone is translated as ‘Fill this my city with people as, Thou hast filled the river with fishes, O Lord.’ This also indicates that the monument was built to mark the city’s foundation as well. As per the historian Historian Mohammed Safiullah, Charminar was built as an epicenter of Hyderabad.
Muhammad Quli Qutb Shah, the ruler of the Golconda Sultanate, founded the city of Hyderabad, which was to serve as the new capital of the kingdom. The city plan was designed by Mir Mu'min Astarabadi, an Iranian scholar and architect. The Charminar formed the centrepiece of the new city. The four arches of the Char Kaman are located directly to the south of the Charminar
The arches demarcated a piazza, called the Jilu Khana, which was surrounded by the royal palaces and the Charminar. Every morning, the noblemen along with their retinue would pass through the square, where the retinue would be left behind, while the noblemen would proceed for an audience with the sultan. In the center of the square is the Gulzar Houz, an octagonal cistern, served to provide drinking water to the waiting attendants, as well as soldiers who would stand guard along the gates of the royal residence. The arches were completed in 1592

The Moazzam Jahi market was constructed in the period 1933-1935, during the reign of Mir Osman Ali Khan. It was conceived and implemented by the City Improvement Board (CIB), which was founded in 1912 by Osman Ali Khan for the development of Hyderabad. This was one of several projects undertaken by the Board as part of an urban renewal. The market was named after prince Moazzam Jah, second son of Osman Ali Khan and president of the CIB.[3] The intention behind the market was to provide a commercial space in the area between Hyderabad Railway Station and the Residency.[4] At the time, the primary market of Hyderabad was still Mir Alam Mandi, located in an older, more congested part of the city.
The building was intended to function as a fruit market, but in practice sold a variety of other produce and goods as well. In the 1980s, the building's fruit market was shifted to the Kothapet fruit market.

Hyderabad is considered the main pearl trading centre in India, because of which the city is also known as the "City of Pearls" wherein almost the entire population is engaged in the delicate art of drilling pearls, a skill they have practiced for generations. This practice also makes the city one of the largest pearl drilling locations in India.
The pearl industry in Hyderabad flourished due to the patronage of the Qutub Shahi kings and the Asaf Jahis, who were said to have an affinity for sparkling jewels. The pearls were not only part of the traditional regalia of this royal clientele but the pearls' crushed form are also believed to have healing and beautifying properties. Princesses were said to be weighed against their pearls during their birthdays while Mir Osman Ali Khan, who is considered the richest among the Nizams, was said to have hoarded sacks of pearls in the basement of his palaces.

Published on Feb, 2025
I recently had an incredible tour of Hyderabad with Mr Srinu, and it was truly a memorable experience! From historical sites to local markets, every moment was well-planned and enjoyable.
We explored famous landmarks like Charminar, Golconda Fort, and Chowmahalla Palace, and our guide’s deep knowledge made history come alive. He also took us to some of the best shopping spots in Hyderabad, where we found beautiful Shawls, perals,Handmade Rugs, traditional bidri handicrafts , at great prices. His local expertise helped us get the best deals and authentic items!
The food recommendations were fantastic too—we enjoyed delicious Hyderabadi biryani and refreshing Irani chai at some of the best local eateries. Throughout the trip, the guide ensured we were comfortable, engaged, and had an amazing time.
I highly recommend this tour to anyone visiting Hyderabad. Whether you're into history, food, or shopping, Mr Srinivas will make your experience truly special!

Culinary and historical tour of Hyderabad
Published on Dec, 2024
We first did the food walk tour in the Hyderabad old city with Mr Srinu. It was wonderful gastronomic experience. All along the walking tour he shared plenty of historic facts and interesting tit bits. At the end of it we wished the tour lasted a bit longer so that we could have sampled many more culinary delights the old city had to offer.
Next day we did the Goloconda fort, Qutub Shahi tombs and Salar Jung Museum tour with Mr Srinu.
It again was an amazing experience. His knowledge of the Southern Indian history is fantastic. There was so much we learnt. It truly was an enriching experience.
I would strongly recommend Mr Srinu and his company Hyderabad by locals for anyone who is looking for a wholesome experience of touring this wonderful city.
