This is a must-do trip if you are in the area and have a day to spare. The trip and its organisation was slick and seamless: meet at the information office in Te Anau to collect your tickets (Grace can also set you up for other adventures and recommend places to eat) jump on the bus and let your driver (the friendly, informative and very professional Keith, in our case) take the strain of where to stop for the best photos, getting to Milford Sound in time for your cruise and parking your own vehicle (the car parks were mobbed even on a Wednesday in late February). We booked the picnic lunch, which is collected on board the boat, and it was well worth the money: sandwiches, fruit, crackers & cheese, biscuits and chocolate.
The cruise boat, The Lady Bowen, is comfortable and modern and, the Captain’s commentary was live, not recorded, so specific to what we were experiencing on the day. Stand at the front or front/right of the boat on your way out for the best views.
Milford Sound itself was glorious. Put down your cameras and take it all in!
