Mauritshuis

I will meet you there, introduce myself and tell you something about the Mauritshuis and its history. This museum has the two most famous paintings of Johannes Vermeer inside, both made in Delft of course!

Binnenhof & Ridderzaal

We will briefly walk onto the square within the parliament complex. Here I will tell you about the significance and history of this place.

Het Plein

We will walk through Het Plein ("The Square") and take a moment to look around and talk about the statue we see, William of Orange. The current king is a direct descendant of him.

Hofvijver

The Hofvijver pond is situated in front of the parliament building and the prime minister's office. You will learn about the significance of this place.

Thorbecke Monument

The statue of Thorbecke next to the Hofvijver is quite interesting. What does it depict and who was Thorbecke even? Let's find out.

Lange Voorhout

This is the Champs-Élysées of The Hague. Quite a nice street! We will walk a bit and pass an art museum, the temporary senate building, a statue gallery of the Dutch heads of states and some more interesting places.

Paleistuin

We will enter the palace garden of Palace Noordeinde, through the little gate that the monarchs used themselves! Let's see if it opens for us.

Statue of Johan de Witt

Another statue! This is the only head of government of the Netherlands that has been eaten by Dutch citizens. That sounds a bit weird, but you'll find out what happened. After this, we will walk to the tram stop for a short trip to Delft.

Museum Prinsenhof Delft

After 26 minutes by tram, we will arrive at the centre of Delft, entering the city through its most beautiful entrance... Through the Prinsenhof. This place has played a deciding role in Dutch history. Let's find out more about it.

Old Church

We are now in the old beer brewing quarter of Delft. Where did the brewers go? We will also see the Old Church, perhaps the most recognizable building of the city. How old is it exactly and why is it so skewed? Who knows!? Well, I happen to know!

Gemeenlandshuis van Delfland

Close to the Oude Kerk, we will see a heavily decorated facade, that of the Gemeenlandshuis. What is this building and why was it so important?

Stadhuis Delft

The old town hall of Delft is (partly) one of the oldest historical buildings of the city, dating to the 13th century. We will walk by it as we enter the Grote Markt square on our way to the New Church. What is so interesting about the town hall? I'll tell you!

Nieuwe Kerk

This is the second-highest church in the Netherlands and the royal family is buried here. Why in Delft actually? If desired, I can buy you tickets to go up the church tower as well. Be warned, it is quite a climb!

We will walk along the oldest canal of Delft, away from the Grote Markt square. In the south of the city centre, we will pass by a large former weapons Armory of the V.O.C. Let's find out more about Delft's role in the golden days of the Dutch Republic. Also around here, we can take a look at the exact spot where Vermeer was standing when he made his famous painting 'View of Delft'.

Going back north, we are passing by the first catholic church that was built in the centre of Delft. There is something funny about the two towers... It is also standing on the spot where Vermeer used to live and make his paintings.

Finally, we pass by the Beestenmarkt in Delft. This is the coziest square of the city, ideal for a lunch or a beer. In the past, this square had a different function.

We had a wonderful tour! Our guide was a young man from Italy who was studying international relations in The Hague, which was an interesting perspective. He went out of his way to show us exactly what we wanted to see. We took the tram from The Hague to Delft, and Delft was really worth seeing. Overall a great day.

What a magical afternoon in the Netherlands exploring both The Hague and the charming town of Delft on our private walking tour with our delightful guide Joris. He really brought both cities to life and was most informative on all.
