Overview

400 Years ago the first Dutch East India Company ships arrived back in Holland filled with the Chinese blue and white porcelain. This porcelain became very popular among affluent families such as the European Royals. When the import of Chinese porcelain declined as a result of civil wars in China, the Dutch potteries seized the opportunity and developed their own version of this blue and white porcelain. This resulted in the birth of Delft Blue in the Netherlands. Nowadays, Delft Blue is one of the true Dutch icons.

Itinerary

  • Royal Delft - Koninklijke Porceleyne Fles

From the approximately 32 potteries that were founded in the 17th Century, Royal Delft, established in 1653, is the only remaining Delftware factory left in Delft. It is a national heritage and a must-see when visiting Holland! Here, the renowned Royal Delftware is still entirely hand painted according to centuries-old tradition. In 1919 the company was awarded the prefix ‘Royal’ confi rming its special relationship with the Dutch Royal family. For generations the Dutch Royal family have been true admirers of Royal Delftware. Nowadays Royal Delft is not only a factory for Delft Blue and a knowledge institute for ceramics, but also a museum. When visiting Royal Delft you discover the complete history and the production process of Delft Blue and Royal Delft in an audiovisual presentation. You witness a painter at work and are introduced to the other two icons of Delft in the themed chambers: the dining room of Johannes Vermeer, the famous 17th century painter from Delft and the Royal Chambers containing the collection of Orange Ceramics that has been produced over the centuries for the Dutch Royal family. In the museum, you can admire the collection of antique and modern pieces of Delft Blue earthenware and in the factory you can witness the authentic production process. In the showroom a comprehensive collection of hand painted earthenware by Royal Delft and a collection of souvenirs is on show. Royal Delft offers workshops during which you can try your hand at painting Delft Blue. Overlooking the beautiful courtyard the Brasserie serves delicious coffee, tea, lunches and High Teas. Tours are available in various languages.

nice experience

Clay making has always been my hobby and biggest passion. So visiting here is sort of must do for me ,I love the storytelling here and you could also make something for yourself.

A must in Delft

Published on Mar, 2025

What a wonderful experience Understanding the history of the pottery was spellbinding and a sheer education I had no idea that Delft pottery wasn’t just blue and white . The exhibition gave such an insight to both the past and present pottery To be able to walk through the factory and watch such dedicated and talented people work was a pleasure

Wonderful afternoon

Published on Feb, 2025

My daughter and I arrived at the Delft factory bedraggled and cold from a long walk from the market square, made so because a bridge was out and also due to our own unfortunate directional decisions. We were greeted warmly by Scot and told that the staff would arrange our high tea to begin sooner than our reservation time so that we could warm up and get comfortable. We had the most wonderful time and spent the entire afternoon having a gorgeous tea, touring the museum and factory with the provided audio tour, and buying many things in the gift shop! There were only two others visiting the museum, so we were able to walk along the factory floor and ask as many questions as we could think of for the master painter, poor man. ;-) I can only imagine how crowded it gets in the summer when the tour buses pull up, but we had a glorious time reading and seeing every little thing by ourselves. The afternoon tea was amazing, and they made an entirely different lactose-free tier of food for me, which was much appreciated. As we were leaving, Scot showed us historical photos of the city of Delft and directed us to a shorter and very enjoyable walk back to the train station, with the directions of "just follow the bikes". We were successful in doing just that! A big thanks to the staff of the museum for this hospitality!

Fantastic visit with family

Published on Jan, 2025

Second time through the museum, both times with high tea, first time doing the tile painting workshop. I love this place (and I'm not a huge museum fan). It's thoughtfully laid out and gives great information on the audio tour (there's even an audio tour for kids!). Besides for the beautiful museum, the highlight of the day was definitely the employees! In the museum itself there are knowledgeable staff on hand that have fun facts, and answer questions, but the standout star of our family day was Scott at reception! He was amazing, accommodated our change in times, gave us the best hints and tips, and is the best brand ambassador I have come across in my travels!

Excellent museum

Five out of five - friendly staff from the start to the exit. Had a great chat with a lady who explained how the royal family’s dinner service was decorated.
