Overview

Imbros Gorge The path into the gorge starts just below the village of Imbros. There are several cafés and tavernas in Imbros and the routes to the entrance of the gorge are clearly marked. From there the path descends gently into the gorge heading south. It is never steep and not particularly difficult (running shoes are good enough for this walk) but as everywhere in Crete the path is stony so you need to pay attention to where you put your feet. Because the gorge is fairly narrow (under 2 meters wide at one point!) and has plenty of trees you will have shade most of the time. After around 120 minutes’ walk from the gorge entrance booth (2,5 hours if you walk really slowly) you will pass an impressive stone arch on your right. After this the gorge widens a little and after around 15 more minutes you get to the road and the village of Komitades where we will be waiting for you to continue the tour or to return you back where we picked you up from!

Imbros Gorge - great alternative to Samaria

We didn't want to hike the full Samaria Gorge, so we thought Imbros Gorge would be a great alternative. It was. Natassa picked us up and cheerfully greeted us, and drove us to the gorge, sharing lots of interesting information along the way. The hike was lovely - not difficult hiking, relatively easy terrain, in the shade most of the way. It's about 8-9 kms, so it took us about 2.5 hours, with lots of photo stops. Natassa met us at the end, and then took us to the nearby fort to look around, and then we stopped for lunch at this delicious restaurant on the beach. After a leisurely lunch, we began the drive back, pausing for photos from an amazing vantage point. What a great day, and Natassa was a terrific guide and resource. Highly recommended.

Hiking through the Imbros Gorge was exactly what my friends and I expected and even more! We were 3 people and we got from our accomodation to the gorge by car, then to a village called Fragkokastello and we ended up in Sfakia for food. We surely enjoyed the food after the amazing hike! Thank you Panos and Natassa, you both were amazing and you made our tour unforgettable!

Incredible experience! Can’t wait to do it again!

Oh, where should I start? We passed through the Imbros Gorge with the help of a nice and experienced mountain guide Natassa provided us with. Then, we went to Fragkokastelo and then Sfakia where we had a delicious, much wanted, meal at a beautiful “Taverna” and then we returned to our base. It was a wonderful experience, Natassa was very helpful from start to finish, she replied immediately whenever we had questions about the tour, Panos was AMAZING, we had so much fun in the car and he made sure we enjoyed every part of the car ride. Safe to say we will DEFINITELY do this again! 100% recommended!
