The interior of Sardinia is wonderful. Seen this ancient ruin reminded me of Mycenae in the Pelopponese. It is equally old and equally inspiring. It is worth a visit and the guided tour (mandatory) of about 1 hour is worth it. It is easy to visualize what is must have been like “in the day” unlike many other ancient rooms. Equally worth a visit is the remains of an old fortification on a hill visible from the Nuraxi. It is an easy hike up and gives you a great view of the Nuraxi itself.

A genuinely fascinating look into a civilisation which we seem to know very little about. Most of the villages built by these Bronze age people were destroyed and built over by the Romans and others who have invaded Sardinia over the centuries, so this is an unique site as it had been covered in earth and so laid pretty much undiscovered until the 1950s when the full extent of what was hidden was revealed. Because this is a World Heritage site, an on-site guide takes you around in a formal tour for no additional cost than the entry cost, however it does, inevitably, limit your time there. But if you have any interest in ancient civilisations this is well worth visiting and is quite an eye opener for the skills and understanding of building and survival nerly 4,000 years ago.

We took the Su Nuraxi Tour on 04/08/2024 in the morning hours from the port of Cagliari. We were the only two people on the tour and we had the pleasure of being shown around by Renato. Renato, we both agree, was our most knowledgable and fascinating guide of our entire trip (and we have taken a lot of tours). Renato was knowledgable, answered all of our questions and made sure to take the time to get to know us and made sure we had all the questions we wanted to have answered about Italy and specifically Cagliari and the Island. Thank you Renato. The tour to Su Nuraxi was fascinating. I can't imagine the amount of work that went into excavating and preparting this Nuraxi site to get it open to the public; however, Renato gave us an awesome tour of the site We loved our morning on this tour, and would definitely recommend that you go see this lovely site on Sardinia.
