This was an incredible hike, the topography and geological aftermath of the 2021,2022 and 2023 eruptions were breathtaking and other worldly. It was a challenging 10 kilometer hike, led by Dave and Ignacio , but worth it for the views, it took our group a solid 4 hours round trip including about an hour of viewing stops and according to our guides , we were going at a relatively fast clip,.. Be advised there is no rest stop after the hike ( we did about 2 hours of sightseeing and driving afterwards) so avail yourself of the portapotties before leaving the site, and bring enough water and food for the day as there is no place visited for either. Kudos to our masterful bus driver Artur on some really narrow roads!
We retuned back to Reykjavik for a meal and rest before being picked up by our Aurora lights tour led by Victoria and driven masterfully by Halli. It was a beautiful, clear night but alas the Northern lights eluded us. Nonetheless, Vicki told tales of Icelandic folklore and sang songs of childhood ( she has an incredible voice!!), gave us hot chocolate and her energy really made it a very worthwhile event. The stars at night in Iceland are bright and plentiful with many wishes on shooting stars made. Glad we tried!
All in all, an wonderful and memorable day!
