This private tour was an all day affair (starting at 7 AM and returning to CDMX around 8 PM) that was full of rich culture visiting both Cholula and Puebla City. Our main guide, Ulises, was very accommodating and knowledgeable about each area we visited. He had many suggestions for other sites we should visit in our future travels, and provided information about the many other tours his company offers both within CDMX and in the surrounding areas. The archaeological site of the Cholula pyramid was closed (Monday and Tuesday), but our local guide, Lupita, still made our first stop in Cholula more than worthwhile. We learned about the history that has already been uncovered as well as ongoing archaeological exploration, heard fascinating legends of the indigenous cultures, and were captivated by stories covering the transition to Catholicism while visiting several cathedrals in the area. We then ventured to Puebla City where we started with a delicious traditional meal (you have to try the mole poblano). After lunch we visited a beautiful cathedral while Ulises provided a detailed background about the design and architecture. The tour concluded with a walk through shops and the arts district where we sampled locally made sweets and learned about Talavera pottery made by certified local artists. This tour is an excellent value for the time, experiences, and personal touches made possible by the excellent guides!
I recommend bringing water, snacks, sunscreen, and a hat as it’s a long, adventure packed day.
PS - I hesitated to try the chapulines (grasshoppers), but they are surprisingly delicious!
