  • Serra da Tronqueira

    The Tronqueira mountain range, located on the eastern side of São Miguel, features rugged dirt roads that connect Nordeste to the municipality of Povoação, near Faial da Terra. From the Tronqueira viewpoint, visitors are treated to stunning views of Pico da Vara, the island’s highest peak at 1,103 meters, and Pico Verde at 931 meters. This viewpoint lies within the heart of the Azorean Bullfinch habitat, surrounded by the island’s most significant patch of Laurel Forest. At certain times of the year, the endemic bird can even be spotted here.

  • Parque Natural da Ribeira dos Caldeiroes

    Ribeira dos Caldeirões Natural Park is a protected area in the Azores, located along the Ribeira dos Caldeirões watercourse in Achada, Nordeste. Nestled on the slopes of Serra da Tronqueira, the park also encompasses part of the Ribeira do Guilherme stream. Known for its lush landscapes, waterfalls, and rich biodiversity, it’s a stunning natural haven, offering a glimpse into the island's pristine environment.

    The Ponta do Sossego viewpoint, located in Lomba da Pedreira just a bit further from Ponta da Madrugada, offers breathtaking coastal views. The stunning sea view stretches to Fajã do Araújo and Praia do Lombo Gordo. Ponta do Sossego is also a beloved gathering place for families, who tradition-ally enjoy weekend picnics surrounded by nature’s beauty.

Amended, but still Amazing!

We learned the evening before the tour that our tour jeep was in the shop, so we agreed to take the van tour instead. Our guide Hugo (the tall one) picked us up at our hotel and, after stopping for a solo tourist from Belgium, we were off to explore the eastern end of São Miguel. It turns out that the van tour is an excellent option for tourists tired from hiking up and over some of the rugged terrain the island has to offer: you will still see some lovely settings and amazing natural features, but you will not need to walk very far to reach them. Hugo was a courteous and considerate driver and guide. In between stops he gave an animated series of talks regarding his island home. Around 13:15 we stopped for a delicious buffet and our little group toasted our good fortune for all that we had experienced. After lunch we continued on, visiting two beautiful waterfalls and finally a quick stop at the famous Santa Barbara surfer beach. Thanks, Hugo, for an amended trip, but still amazing!

We had a wonderful trip other than the meeting site per the viator map was not the same as true pickup which was at port terminal. Our guide was wonderful and shared the tour with a Portuguese couple so our guide had to do the work of two as he had to switch back and forth between languages. We saw the most spectacular and vivid foliage. Went to Sycamore lane, a reserve only for 4X4, a quiet garden on the coast, lunch and the waterfalls. Would definitely recommend to others looking for beautiful scenery away from the crowds.

This tout allowed to see the northeast side of the island in about 6.5 hours. For lunch we stopped at a wonderful buffet style restaurant. The food was fresh and tasty with a good amount of choice.

We saw many beautiful and interesting places. We had an extremely gentle guide who was an excellent driver. He answered all our questions and we got to know more about the Island and its habitants.
