Our first full day in New Zealand (after traveling 24+ hours from Phoenix, Arizona), Heidi Anderson picked us up at our lodge in Christchurch for a private guided half-day hike on the Godley Head Loop Track. I was afraid we’d be too jet-lagged for the adventure, but Heidi (a fitness instructor!) was patient with our relatively leisurely pace, my occasional requests to take a “breather,” and my compulsion to take lots of photos. While we ooh’d and ahh’d over the spectacular coastal views, Heidi entertained us with stories about the historical landmarks (e.g., Scott’s Cabin, WWII gun platforms and military batteries) and general background on the beaches and geological formations. While we weren’t fortunate enough to see any seals, whales, or penguins during our hike, we truly enjoyed the breathtaking views and were grateful for Heidi’s informative presence!
