The limestone forming Batu Caves is said to be around 400 million years old. Batu Caves was founded by K. Thamboosamy Pillai, an Indian trader in 1891, as a Hindu Temple dedicated to Lord Murugan. A 42.7-metre high gold-painted statue of Lord Murugan was unveiled in January 2006, having taken 3 years to construct. It is the 2nd tallest Lord Murugan statue in the world.

Located near Batu Caves is the Sri Durgai Amman Temple, dedicated to Goddess Durga, often regarded as the most powerful female Hindu deity - often depicted with 8 or 10 hands.
As a symbol of the triumph of good over evil, Goddess Durga is portrayed in mythology as a warrior who vanquishes the demonic powers that threaten the social order, economic well-being, and dharma.
In this temple, Goddess Durga is represented as a stunning woman riding a lion, her numerous hands armed with weapons to vanquish evil spirits.
In essence, Goddess Durga's multiplicity of arms embodies her role as an all-powerful and fiercely protective goddess.

It is a historic bronze sculpture that pays tribute to those who died in combat during Malaysia’s battle for freedom against the Japanese occupation during World War II and the Malayan Emergency from 1948 till 1960. It serves as a remembrance of the bravery, courage and unity of the fighters who laid down their lives for Malaysia’s independence. The statue has earned its place in the book of records as the tallest freestanding group of bronze sculptures at 15-meter high.

Its key features are a 73-metre-high (240 ft) minaret and a 16-pointed star concrete main roof. The umbrella, synonymous with the tropics, is featured conspicuously – the main roof is reminiscent of an open umbrella, the minaret's cap a folded one. The folded plates of the concrete main roof are a creative solution to achieving the larger spans required in the main gathering hall. Reflecting pools and fountains spread throughout the compound. Completed in 1965, the mosque is a bold and modern approach in reinforced concrete, symbolic of the aspirations of a then newly independent nation.
Warisan Merdeka Tower (Pass By)

Putri was wonderful. She handled all the details for us and took us some amazing places. I especially enjoyed Batu Cave. It was a challenging walk up 300 or so steps, but we'll worth it.

Fantastic views but a long bus ride home
Published on Apr, 2024
I enjoyed all of the sights we saw but really enjoyed Batu Caves despite the climb to get there. Putri did a fantastic job providing the history of each spot, providing sufficient time, and keeping our small group moving and on time.
Some things that would have been good to know in advance since there was plenty of communication is that you need to fill out the Malaysia digital arrival card (MDAC) in advance. Also ladies need to have something that will cover their knees to climb up to Batu Caves. I was able to buy a cheap wrap at the base of the stairs.
