Overview

On this walking tour, we cast our minds back more than 200 years to a time when Sir Thomas Stamford Bingley Raffles of the British East India Company arrived in Singapore, started a British trading post in 1819, became part of the Straits Settlements in 1826, and eventually a separate colony of the British crown in 1867. We’ll visit well-preserved structures from the Georgian, Victorian and Edwardian eras, and stately neo-classical style buildings, which have all been restored to showcase the splendour of Colonial Singapore. We pay tribute to our former colonial masters who left behind their legacy of careful town planning, sound legal system, good education system, solid infrastructure, impressive architecture, etc, which have certainly played a significant part in the development of modern Singapore. At about midday, we’ll kick back and enjoy lunch by the Singapore River at Boat Quay, before we resume our tour of the Civic District and Old European Town.

We explore the 2 colonial buildings which now make up the National Gallery Singapore, namely the Former Municipal Building (later renamed City Hall Building) and the Former Supreme Court Building. Discover the hidden gems in the oldest surviving building in Singapore, dating from 1827.

Discover how 2 buildings, one formerly the Town Hall and the other the Memorial Hall for Queen Victoria, built more than 40 years apart, were amalgamated to form one. We also take a look at the original bronze statue of Sir Stamford Raffles and learn about its association with football!

    10 minutes

  • Asian Civilisations Museum (Pass By)

Formerly the Government Offices of Colonial Singapore.

Cross the oldest surviving suspension bridge in Singapore, and learn about what life was like along the Singapore River about 200 years ago.

Well-rounded Singapore tour

Published on Jan, 2025

Excellent well-rounded tour of the Historical buildings near the Bay area in Singapore. Ping was our guide, and she was very knowledgeable and friendly. She also took pictures for us and gave us suggestions on things to see and do in the area. Lunch was a nice addition too! Recommended.

Colonial Singapore Walking Tour led by Ping

Very informative tour led by Ping. Wonderful knowledge of the city, the history and how it works. The ancient history and the development of Singapore into the city it is today was fascinating.

Excellent walking tour without being too exhausting

The buildings were amazing, a side to Singapore we had not seen before and our guide Ping took a lot of photos which she forwarded to us by email.

Amazing tour of the history of Singapore with Ping.

Published on Oct, 2024

Our guide Ping took us on one of the best walking tours we have ever been on. It was because she had so much passion and personal stories about the rise of Singapore as a country since independence. We were particularly taken aback when we saw the pivotal buildings like city hall where the war with Japan was finished and papers were signed. We saw so many more interesting sites that were all weaved together with such knowledge and storytelling from Ping. History brought back to life. Even the aerial view from the “space ship” on top of the courts was surreal. Lunch is included and this makes the Colony tour number one on the to do list for any visitor to Singapore.

Fantastic tour about Singapore.
