Overview

Prepare yourself for an unforgettable and frozen adventure from Skaftafell National Park. This is the perfect opportunity for those who want to experience a long hiking adventure on Falljökull, "The Falling Glacier", part of Vantajökull, Europe's largest glacier. We will use different techniques to explore far into the glacier to make sure you let the ice fall amaze you and the breathtaking scenery leave you speechless.

Meeting points

Be at our meeting point 20 minutes before departure time. If you arrive after departure time your place on the tour can't be guaranteed or refunded. Meeting point is at Troll Expeditions Skaftafell on Maps. Driving time from Reykjavik is around 4 hours and a half in good weather conditions.

Itinerary

After a short ride on the famous “Tröll Bus”, you’ll immerse yourself in the glacier and begin a short hike to the ice cap. Once there, your guide will explain how to get geared up and what the safest practices to walk on a glacial surface. Once you have your crampons and all necessary equipment on it’s time to take to the ice and begin the adventure. As you get into the glacier outlet, the majestic features of the natural world amaze you. Falljökull is a glacial tongue from Vatnajökull, Europe’s largest glacier. The icefall in the area is unique on earth and the further you get, the more it will blow your mind. The out-worldly scenery is comprised the ice formations in the area: deep crevasses, pale moulins, and even ice sculptures. The further we continue exploring, the more the beautiful it gets. Since we’re going to be so high up, we will be able to observe panoramas over Skaftafell National Park, that has gained fame in the last years for being the location for many films and shows. During your expedition, your glacier guide will let you know how glaciers are formed and what are the dangers. You will also learn about the consequences of global warming and their future.

Have Fun Up&down the Ice

Loved the tour! It was fun! Does not require any particular hiking skills - if you want real stuff, go private. But with the group, there's no hurry. The guide chooses only safe paths through the glacier, still you'll see beautiful spots and have fun walking up and down the ice in crampons. Jay, our guide, was very helpful and caring, and, at the same time, entertaining, so we had a fantastic time. The company provides all necessary stuff, including proper hiking boots, so if you decide to take this tour without advance planning, you'll be still well equipped. My rating is 10 out of 10)) I definitely recommend this tour!

This hike was just amazing. I highly recommend the 5 hour tour (3 hours is just not enough!). The scenery was breathtaking, it was not a super hard hike, and we felt safe at all times with our excellent guide. 5 stars to our awesome, knowledgeable, funny guide Jean-Romain, the experience would not have been the same without him. We crossed paths with other Troll guides along the way, and everyone seemed super friendly and that they clearly know what they are doing up on the glacier. A must do in Iceland for sure.

We had a lovely 5hr hike with Ana as our guide. She was amazing! Very patient, kind and enthusiastic! We were so lucky to have her as our guide. A beautiful tour with amazing views and experience of hiking a glacier.

We had a great time with Phillip as our guide. He was very knowledgeable and kept us all safe while showing us a great time. It was nice that they had multiple guides so it felt small. We had a larger group in our tour, but only 8 (including our family of 4) in Phillip’s group so it made it more intimate and easier to feel safe.

We felt safe and cared for throughout and the views were spectacular. They could have dropped us a bir closer to the start of the climb as other tours did, but it was a minor inconvenience. It was a good workout, but not technical or overwhelming at any point.
