Overview

On this adventurous, small-group, glacier hike from Skaftafell - Vatnajökull National Park, you'll explore the majestic glacial landscape of one of Vatnajökull outlet glaciers. You will be provided with crampons and ice axes, and an experienced, certified glacier guide will teach you how to use the equipment before you step on to the ice. During your 4-hour tour, you will hike through a wonderland of ice sculptures and deep crevasses, traversing zones of different glacial formations. The tour is of moderate difficulty, and to ensure a personal experience, groups are limited to 8 participants. Choose from the following departure times when booking: 9am, 9:30am, 1pm, and 1:30pm.

Itinerary

Skaftafell National Park

The tour departs from our Skaftafell Base Camp, right on the Skaftafell campsite next to the visitor center. 20 minutes prior to departure, you will meet your experienced glacier guide, who will gear the group up with crampons, ice axes and harnesses. When everyone is ready, you will take our glacier bus up to the glacier for an amazing adventure.

We head to the glacier on our Glacier Bus. After a few minute's drive from our Skaftafell Base Camp, there is a short hike up to the roots of the glacier. After a short introduction on how to use the glacier gear, we step onto the glacier and into a frozen wonderland. The guide will lead the group through deep crevasses and majestic ice ridges. With about 2 hours on the glacier, we have plenty of time to take pictures and make memories. After the wonderful adventure, we head back to our Skaftafell Base Camp.

Great time with Lucian on the glacier!

The glacier tour with Lucian was fabulous! We were traveling as a family of 5 ranging in ages from mid 20s to mid 60s. We all thought this was one of the highlights of our Icelandic vacation. Our group was small (7) and Lucian was fantastic. He made us all feel safe, comfortable and wanted to provide an incredible experience (which he did!) He even volunteered to take some pictures of us with our camera in some very cool places making for great souvenirs of the experience. For most of us, this was not our first glacier hike, but it was certainly one of the best! In addition to providing a wonderful experience, we felt that Lucian was focused on our safety. Would highly recommend this hike!

Fantastic glacier hike

This was a truly amazing glacier hike and Mark is a fantastic tour guide. (For reference, this was my 5th glacier hike, although my first in Iceland). An absolute highlight in a week of amazing Icelandic activities. After a short drive to the glacier, our group of 8 headed toward the ice fall. We spent some time on the plateau, and then the crevasses, and ultimately landed at the base of the icefall where we had a short picnic lunch on the ice. Mark showed us many really interesting ice features, including a small cave, and taught us a lot about glaciers. He was extremely safety conscious but also very friendly and easy going. We really enjoyed our day with him and knew we were in very expert hands. Highly recommend Icelandic Mountain Guides, Mark, and this glacier hike in particular.

This was one of the best experiences I have had in my life, with the most astonishing views of the glacier. Even though we couldn’t enter the ice cave for security reasons our guide Marc Francis made sure we enjoyed a magnificent trip and we were really lucky with the weather. Marc made sure we understood the safety measures and had all our safety equipment and snacks for the trip. Along the way we enjoyed some great views, Marc explained everything we saw and answer all our questions. He was also a great photographer. Would definitely love to do it again.

This was one of the coolest and memorable experiences I’ve had. The landscape and scenery were truly amazing! Our guide Kari helped make the trip however. He was very professional and knowledgeable while being funny and interesting. He made sure we were safe and entertained throughout the 5 hours. To make your experience more comfortable make sure you bring gloves and go to the bathroom just before you set off on the bus.
