Overview

A day of excitement, culture, kai and connection… For generations, Te Puia has welcomed manuhiri (visitors) from all over the world to explore the magic hidden within Te Whakarewarewa Thermal Valley. Our 90 minute guided tour will bring you face to face with the biggest, naturally active geyser in the Southern Hemisphere Pōhutu Geyser, and enjoy the up-close experience with the New Zealand Kiwi, in our brand-new Kiwi Conservation Centre. Be mesmerized by exploding mud pools all throughout the valley and gaze at beautifully crafted Māori-made artwork and sculptures visible throughout Te Puia. Watch carvers and weavers demonstrate their skills at the New Zealand Māori Arts and Crafts Institute, and hear our guides share stories passed down from their ancestors. Our wānanga (school) is a lighthouse for indigenous culture, worldwide. We are honoured to open the doors to our wānanga and show you the work of internationally recognised artists.

Excellent and informative

Our guide was a native Māori. Because of her I fell in love with the people and their culture. The lands are beautiful. Their geysers are natural. Words can’t express it

Review of Pe Puia - Te Po Combo

Published on Feb, 2025

The experience was fantastic! I did the Te Puia - Te Po combo. The walk of the geysers was fantastic, and the wood carving shop was very interesting. The buffet was delicious, and the performance was spectacular. Lots of other things to do, such as viewing the Kiwis, we're included in this parrtuliar tour. However, the guide John went above and beyond to ensure I had a great experience. Highly recommend!

A not to be missed experience

Apart from the smell, this is a great place to visit. The guide was entertaining and knowledgeable. He was happy to talk and answer any question. It's educational and there's a lot to see. You can visit everywhere on your own as well as doing a tour. The Kiwi's were cute.

Loved learning about Maori culture

We did the Te Puia: Te Po - Indigenous Evening Experience with Hangi Dinner Buffet and it was hands down one of our favorite experiences of the entire trip. We absolutely loved the food - there were so many vegetarian options! - and learning more about the Maori culture from the Maori people was such an enlightening experience. Be respectful when you go and follow the instructions and I'm sure you will love it as much as we did. The geyser at the end with the sunset in the background was a beautiful bonus.

Wonderful introduction to Maori history, culture, and art.

This was a wonderful experience. My husband and I went on the guided tour, had a delicious dinner, and then experienced the Haka presentation. First, the guided tour was amazing. It was wonderful to learn about Maori culture and customs from a guide who was extremely enthusiastic and happy to share everything he could in the limited amount of time we had together. His passion reflected the earnest pride he feels. The buffet dinner was very good for a buffet dinner (interpret that as you'd like.) There was much variety and the food was hot and fresh. Finally, the Haka ceremony was something I did not expect to enjoy so thoroughly. We have been to many luau's in Hawaii, and for some reason I thought this was going to be similar to that. But this was so much more. Specifically, there was an authentic enthusiasm by the performers about sharing the Maori culture with visitors. The experience was taken seriously by the performers and the audience as a sacred and solemn ceremony. I didn't feel like I was eavesdropping on another culture, rather, this was a genuine act of friendship and drive on the part of Te Puia to educate the public about Maori culture and art. I would recommend this experience for anyone interested in learning about the Maori as a part of their exploration of New Zealand.
