Overview

Ice caves in Iceland are unpredictable and you never know when, if, where or how many will form. But in the last few years, they have consistently formed by Vatnajökull glacier, which is the largest glacier in Europe. They are beautiful to see and a popular photo opportunity for many travelers. This tour will take you on an exploration of an ice cave inside the National Park of Vatnajökull. Ice caves are a rare phenomena that form naturally, so this tour is a once in a life time experience.

  • Suitable for all physical fitness levels
  • You must meet us at the departure location. This tour departs from Jökulsárlón café which is about 390 km east from Reykjavík, Just by the parking lot of the glacier lagoon Jökulsárlón. Please arrive at least 10 minutes before your booked departure time
  • Warm and waterproof clothing required
  • Hiking shoes required (We do not offer hiking shoes rental for this tour. Please wear hiking shoes or you will not be fit to go into the ice cave.)
  • The weather in Iceland is unpredictable and can be changing rapidly. Our guides check on a daily base if it is save to go to the ice cave.*
  • Our guide decides which cave to visit every day depending on safety and weather conditions. If on that day the cave is not suitable to enter, due to unforeseeable reasons such as a glacial flood, excessive rain around the cave, our guide will inform you at the meeting point. You can choose to either follow our guide on a glacier hike to the cave (but do not enter due to safety reasons), or you can choose on site to cancel the tour with a full refund. If you choose the glacier hike we will also refund you 30% of the tour. We hope the glacier hike and partial refund will compensate you, as the surrounding area of Vatnajökull is extremely beautiful and does not disappoint.

Great experience

Fantastic trip with Ice Explorers. The stated 1.5 hours was all time on location, not including travel time from the meeting location to the glacier parking, and our guide Guillermo was absolutely lovely. There were some crowds at the cave when we went in, but by the time we were coming out, most of the others had already left, and we were able to get good, people-free shots. The light and the blues in the ice cave ceiling were fantastic. Only one niggle - I don't understand why weren't given full crampons instead of the spring-like YakTrak style mini-traction devices. Getting onto the glacier and into the cave was very slick, but there were ropes to hang onto. Once inside the cave, there were ice floors and you were on your own. Footing was really bad in places and full crampons would have made a huge difference.

All the view here are stunning, you can’t imagine how amazing is the Mother Nature amazing. Also, the ice cream is good from the farm !! The tour is humour and sweet. I am very enjoy with it

Svabbi was a fantastic guide! Very funny and engaging and made the whole day great. The extra stops along the way were awesome and we got to see everything and he explained a lot about Iceland and its culture and answered any questions.

The Golden Circle tour was an unforgettable experience, filled with breathtaking scenery that I will treasure forever. The highlight for me was Gullfoss waterfall, which I highly recommend to anyone visiting Iceland—it’s truly mesmerizing. The tour also provided detailed explanations about the Golden Circle’s landmarks, making it both educational and enjoyable. Additionally, the convenience of hotel pick-up and drop-off made the journey seamless and stress-free. I thoroughly enjoyed every moment of this well-organized tour!
